Sanitizers and oxidizers.

Pool sanitizers are used to keep your pool water free from bacteria and inhibit the growth of viruses, algae, and other organic pollutants found in the pool water. Chlorine is the most common pool water sanitizer. It is a sanitizer and oxidizer that helps maintain a clean and healthy pool. Pool oxidizers are a type of chemical that is added to pool water in order to shock the water and kill any contaminants that are present. These chemicals are typically added to the pool in small doses, and they work by releasing a large amount of oxygen into the water.

Is oxidizer the same as chlorine? The shocking agent, typically a non-chlorine oxidizer, breaks down the chloramines (the bad and smelly chlorine) so that they can help in the sanitizing process. It becomes chlorine again. There are two types of shocking agents — chlorine and non-chlorine. Most non-chlorine shocks are labeled as oxidizers, a nod to the chemical reaction.
